{"id":2421,"date":"2018-10-13T09:43:08","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T23:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/?p=2421"},"modified":"2018-10-13T09:43:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T23:43:08","slug":"japan-part-2-of-2-the-rest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/?p=2421","title":{"rendered":"Japan part 2 of 2 &#8211; The Rest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, when we landed back in Australia after our trip to Japan 3 months ago, we had grand plans of how many blog posts we could do about Japan. Unfortunately, we&#8217;ve settled back into not-traveling mode and have been slacking on blog posting. So, I&#8217;ll try to make this one epic.<\/p>\n<p>All of our lodging in Japan was done via Airbnb and we picked places as a group and everyone was happy.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Japan instituted new laws regarding short term holiday rentals 2 weeks prior to our arrival.\u00a0 That caused both of our Tokyo rentals to be canceled at the last minute, including one on the day of check-in right before we got on the plane in Singapore. Chaos! In the end, it all worked out, but our lodging choices weren&#8217;t the perfect ones we had so painstakingly researched and chosen as a group.\u00a0 The only good news was that in addition to refunding money for canceled reservations, Airbnb also gave us a credit equal to the amount of the reservation.\u00a0 So we ended up spending maybe $300 for 6 nights of lodging for 4 adults in Tokyo!<\/p>\n<p>So, upon arrival into Japan, Sara and I found an ATM and withdrew our first 25,000 yen.\u00a0 Japan is still a bit of a cash based society, which goes against my nature.\u00a0 I have trouble with Australian cash as there is a coin that is worth $2 and I&#8217;m always afraid of losing it.\u00a0 Well, Japan as a 500 yen coin which is worth about $5.\u00a0 Anyway, we took this cash and used it to buy a PASMO card &#8211; a stored value card used for the trains and metro all over Japan.\u00a0 You can also use it to buy things from vending machines and convenience stores.\u00a0 Hmmm&#8230; the Japanese appear to have invented a less convenient credit card.<\/p>\n<p>Enough babbling, lets get into the highlights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MarioKart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an early email when planning the trip, Jen mentioned there wasn&#8217;t much she *had* to do, but the MarioKart adventure was one of them.\u00a0 I was a bit skeptical of what to it would be like, but it exceeded my expectations and then some.\u00a0 We got costumes, go carts and toured the streets of Tokyo for about an hour and half without being run over by anyone. People took pictures of us. The stadium experience also included super tiny seats and women walking around with mini-kegs in backpacks selling tap beer.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the Swallows came up one run short and lost.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2446\" style=\"width: 1368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bball1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bball1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"912\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Live action at the ballpark<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2466\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2466\" style=\"width: 572px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bball2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bball2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"485\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great day for a ballgame<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Umbrellas\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FR7qYSkC7UM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, there is no shortage of bars in Japan.\u00a0 Mike is a big whiskey fan and I&#8217;ve been known to enjoy beer.\u00a0 The craft beer scene isn&#8217;t very big in Japan, but the whiskey scene is, along with the tiny bar scene.\u00a0 Our first night in Japan, we went to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shinjuku_Golden_Gai\">Golden Gai<\/a> and stopped at three bars that each could hold a total of about 5-10 people.\u00a0 All were very different experiences and all very fun.\u00a0 Everywhere we went, we managed to find neat little bars to pop into and have a drink.\u00a0 When we were in Kyoto, we even found beer vending machines, which was one of my favorite things ever. We braved not so light showers and not so small crowds to see The Golden Pavilion Rokuon-Ji Temple.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2459\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2459\" style=\"width: 1368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Temple4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2459\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Temple4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"912\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Golden!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We also got to experience Buddist chanting at the Obakusan Mampukuji, a Zen Buddist temple. We never would have come across this particular temple, but we took a tour with a local guide who brought us there and it was quite an interesting thing to witness.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2458\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2458\" style=\"width: 1368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Temple3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2458\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Temple3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"912\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2458\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More temples<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2467\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2467\" style=\"width: 1008px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Temple5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Temple5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1008\" height=\"585\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chanting monks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Assorted Touring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other touristing adventures, we wandered through the Rikugien Gardens, a peaceful pocket of green in the midst of Tokyo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2440\" style=\"width: 1368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Assorted2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Assorted2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"912\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Very peaceful<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We also walked around the <span class=\"module__title__link\">Tsukiji fish market area. There is a famous auction that you can watch if you are willing to get up at way too early o&#8217;clock. We were not willing so we just walked around the area once it opens to the public at the very normal hour of 11 am. By then things are winding down and there isn&#8217;t much activity, but it was interesting to see how massive the it is.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2439\" style=\"width: 1008px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Assorted1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Assorted1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1008\" height=\"756\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fresh fish!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We also went to Odaiba which is an artificial island in Tokyo bay with great views of the city skyline.\u00a0 Randomly there is a miniature (but still large) version of the Statue of Liberty there.\u00a0 Not sure why.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2441\" style=\"width: 1368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Assorted3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Assorted3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1368\" height=\"912\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Selfie with skyline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Random Fun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are so many arcades all over Tokyo. So. Many. We popped into a few and got to watch Mike tear up the dance floor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2450\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2450\" style=\"width: 880px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fun1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fun1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"764\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2450\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Busta move<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sara and Jen managed to decode enough of a Japanese photo booth to create these amazing photos.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2451\" style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fun2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fun2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"777\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike and I skipped this.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was entranced by a very serious man playing a train driver game while wearing a uniform and gloves. I am pretty sure it wasn&#8217;t an actual training simulator given it was in the middle of a random arcade, but why the uniform and gloves?<\/p>\n<p>And while you are walking around Kyoto and working up a sweat, don&#8217;t worry, cold refreshing beer could be just around the next corner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2462\" style=\"width: 1076px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vending.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.handelblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vending.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1076\" height=\"859\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Is anything more fun than a vending machine that sells cold refreshing beer?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Trains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We took so many trains! There is one line that does a big circle around Tokyo and since most everything we did and both places we stayed were near this line, we took it all over.\u00a0 At the least &#8220;peak&#8221; time, trains come every 4 minutes or so and are full!
